Why Slöyd Experience Canada?
Slöyd Experience Canada is built on Educational Sloyd, the teaching method developed by Otto Salomon in 19th-century Sweden. Salomon’s core insight still holds: the finished object is not the point — the child is. Students build real, useful things in careful sequence, from simple to complex, and each one completes their own work from start to finish. The result isn’t just a well-made object — it’s a student who’s grown more focused, self-reliant, and confident. We’re now expanding that approach across Vancouver Island and beyond.

Students build real, useful objects — not decorative fragments or abstract drills. Salomon believed usefulness is what makes learning matter to a child, and that principle still guides every project we design.

We believe hands-on craft should be available to every child, with financial aid and support making our programming more inclusive.
Educators First

Our instructors are trained to think like educators, not only skilled hands. Salomon was clear that technical skill alone doesn’t make a good teacher — understanding how a child learns comes first.

The finished piece matters less than what it builds in the student — focus, self-reliance, patience, and pride in honest work. Each student completes their own project, start to finish, at their own pace.
● Our Story
Meet Dylan
Dylan Warnberg is a carpenter, student of life, and father of three boys — his greatest teachers. Alongside his wife Amy, a French Immersion teacher, Dylan founded Slöyd Experience Canada to create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences where children build skill, confidence, and self-trust through real work.
Grounded in traditional craft and years of working alongside kids, Dylan approaches teaching as a practice of patience, presence, and respect for a child’s natural curiosity — the chance to slow down, work with their hands, and discover what they’re capable of building.
Outside the workshop, Dylan continues to learn alongside his sons, bringing the same curiosity, patience, and hands-on problem-solving he teaches into everyday family life.
Slöyd Experience Canada was shaped with essential insight and inspiration from Luke and Allison in Colorado, founders of The Slöyd Experience, whose work helped get the project off the ground.
