Education through purposeful work
Otto Salomon noticed it 150 years ago: children who learn to work wood get better at concentrating, at sticking with hard things, at doing careful work when nobody's watching. He built a teaching method around it, and it spread through schools across Europe and North America.
We teach it the way he intended. One child, one bench, real tools, their own pace. The work is difficult on purpose — never more than a child can handle

It's the first thing most people ask, and it's the right question. Every participant is oriented to a tool before they touch it. Groups are kept intentionally small — a 1:8 ratio. Each technique is demonstrated at the bench, then practiced under watch. Safety comes from knowledge and respect, not from removing the challenge — a sharp, well-maintained tool used correctly is safer than a dull or cheap one.

Most children come on their own and work independently. If you'd like to stay, you're welcome — sitting on the sideline, watching. We'll ask you not to touch the work or offer instruction. A child who knows the work is entirely their own stands differently at the bench. It's a harder ask than it sounds.

No to both. Every child works at a bench built to their height, with a Japanese pull saw and a block plane that are theirs for the session. Beginners are the default — we teach measuring, marking, and cutting from scratch. All traditional tools, no power — just perseverance and a love of honest labor.
